Chapter2 Basic Mechanics of Puncher Type

In General idea, we can not swing strongly without some kind of preparation motion like "load". Incidentally, "load" means moving hands back at the same time as taking a stride forward. In other words, it can be said as "counter movement".
"Lord" or "Counter Movement"
But in consciousness, we can swing from batting stance directly without load. And actually, load occurs automatically in that swing. (like following video clip) So then, this is very important theme that  "consciousness" on own swing motion is different from actual swing motion considerably.

About this video clip, I had many discussions with him, and he understood my theory well. So that, I can say that clearly, that is, in his consciousness, he starts his swing from batting stance directly, and as a result, the "load" occurs automatically before the swing. And of course, he understands that system enough.

By the way, hitters in following video clips seem to start their swing directly from batting stance.

Adrian Beltre,  Albert Pujols,  Matt Kemp,  Justin Morneau, Shin-Soo ChooBrett Harper

If you try to swing after the load (as a conscious motion), you will not be able to swing like them. Because as for in consciousness, they start their swing from batting stance directly. However, and on the other hand, side view of their swing shows us the load (as an actual motion).

This is a kind of  "PARADOX", and this paradox suggests the most important system of puncher type mechanics. At the same time, it can rather be said as a "TRICK", and that trick have caught many hitters in snare of hitting mechanics. So that, explaining the system of "TRICK" will give somewhat help for many hitters.

Now, I describe the puncher type mechanics below. And you will understand about that trick. First, let me write about outline of it with using experiment of chapter1.

1) In my consciousness, I decided to accelerate my right hand from this point directly.
2) My leg muscles contract unconsciously, and as a result, my legs push the ground automatically. Further result, my whole body is carried forward by ground reaction force, and my right hand moves backward by counteraction of the weight transfer. Incidentally all of these "phenomenon" occurs automatically.
3) As a result of (2), my torso's muscles are stretched along diagonal line from back shoulder to front hip. Incidentally, I call that line as "cross-line".
4) Arm swing starts by cross-line-muscle contraction.
5) My arm is accelerating by cross-line-muscle contraction.
6) Follow through.

action-reaction law
Now, I present the following experiment. Firstly, stand with your feet shoulder width apart, and put your top hands in launch position. Secondly, lift up your front leg and put your weight on the back leg. Finally, try to punch from set up position directly as possible as quickly. ( If you do not warm up enough, you may hurt your shoulder )

Experiment about principle of puncher type

If you try to accelerate your hand from set up position directly, weight transfer motion (stride) and load will occur automatically before the swing. And this is easy to confirm by using a video camera. Of course, side view is suitable for conforming it.

So why did stride and load occur automatically? In fact, this question represents the essence of puncher type mechanics. That is, human body has a nature that when trying to accelerate the hands quickly without counter movement, lower body generates the power firstly more than upper body. This nature can be confirmed more easily when trying to generate a maximum power for the quick acceleration.

Thus, when you try to accelerate your hand from set up position directy, your legs generate the power firstly. So that, in the case of above experiment, your back leg pushes the ground before the hand acceleration. And your body moves forward by the ground reaction force. In addition, your hand moves back by counteraction of body movement. This is the mechanics of stride and load, that is, these occur automatically.

Following video clip (side view of Andruw Jones) show that mechanics clearly. that is, his lower body generate the power and push the ground in initial stage of hitting mechanics. On the other hand, he also seems to start his swing from batting stance directly. And in fact, he should try to start his swing directly in his consciousness. In particular, it is easy to imagine when watch his front view.

Attention his legs (especially his back leg). His legs generate the power from batting stance suddenly, and push the ground strongly. (Second shot of following sequence photograph)  As a result, ground reaction force carries his body forward, that is, this is the weight transfer. And his hands are moved back by counteraction of weight transfer. Of course, these motions occur automatically in unconscious. And trying to accelerate a bat quickly causes these automatic motion.

When you try to start your swing in the consciousness, stride and load occur automatically before swing starts actually. By the way, this fact means that there is a time lug between "consciousness" and "actual". And this time lug is also seen in arm wrestling or sprint. In these case, there is a split-second between "you try to move in your consciousness" and "your body begins to move actually". In the case of puncher type, stride and load occur while this split-second.
Time lag between "consciousness" and "actual".
And in this scene, torso's muscles are extended by opposite movement of hands and body. So next, these muscles contract as a result of  "stretch reflex". And this muscle contraction leads the arm swing.

Stretch reflex is automatic muscle contraction that looks like rubber's contraction after extension.  And that muscle contraction occurs without brain's command.  In other words, that is unconscious muscle contraction.

So then, let's try above experiment with having a stick in your top hand. And next, let's have that stick with your both hand, and try that experiment again. Yes, that is just the batting for it's own sake. And this is the basic mechanics of puncher type.

By the way, in the puncher type mechanics, body trunk muscles contract along diagonal line leading from back shoulder to front hip, and I named this line as cross-line. Cross line consists of Pectoralis major muscle, External oblique muscle, Internal oblique muscleRectus abdominal muscle, and a part of Serratus anterior muscle.

And as a result of cross-line-muscle contraction, puncher type's swing becomes top-hand-dominant-swing.

Cross-line-muscle contraction causes top-hand-shoulder adduction, lateral bending of trunk, and shoulder rotation.

           lateral bending of trunk

     shoulder rotation

top-hand dominant swing with cross-line-muscle contraction.

Image of the top-hand-dominant swing with cross-line-muscle-contraction

However, top-hand-dominant-swing is just a result of stretch reflex, and stretch reflex is an unconscious muscle contraction. So that, you must not have consciousness of using your top hand. In other words, you must not use your top hand mainly and consciously.

A typical swing of puncher type  (Lyle Overbay)

You should have consciousness of quick swing and hard hitting, and you should concentrate it 100%. In addition, from the point of practical view, you should not think about "which hands dominate swing", becaise it is just only the result of unconscious muscle contraction.

By the way, please carry out above experiment like a slow motion video. In this case, stride and load should not occur automatically. Human body tend to move automatically when it is moving at high speed. And puncher type mechanics use that "nature" of human body's movement. So that, "hit hard" becomes importance, as for in the puncher type mechanics.

More Detail (pre-motion-silent-period)

By the way, why legs generate the power in the start of hitting mechanics?  I will write about it in this section. First, muscle has a nature that is called as "pre-motion-silent-period". Pre-motion-silent-period means unconscious muscle relaxation before sudden and strong muscle contraction from sustained state (without momentum motion). And it occurs in split second before the muscle contraction. For example, when you try to generate the big power suddenly and quickly from sustained state, pre-motion-silent-period will be observed in your muscles. And following figure is one example of experiment for the pre-motion-silent-period. In this experiment, Subject of experiment stands with keeping his knee flexion and he jumps as possible as quickly after light signal. That is, it means sudden and quick power generation from sustained state.

And following figure is electromyography of pre-motion-silent-period. pre-motion-silent-period can be observed in a split second.

※) Pre-motion-silent-period is different from conscious muscle relaxation, and it's not even close. At the first place, pre-motion-silenrt-period occurs when you have a consciousness of power production. In a sense, pre-motion-silent-period is a opposite phenomenon of conscious muscle relaxation.

Pre-motion-silent-period occurs at the split second, That is, pre-motion-silent-period means "time lug" between "you decided to generate the power" and "muscles contract actually". For example, pre-motion-silent-period can be observed in arm wrestling.

As for in the case of batting (puncher type), pre-motion-silent-period occurs in upper body's muscles when you decided to accelerate your bat in your consciousness. And lower body's muscles contract at the same time as upper body's pre-motion-silent-period.

So then, following theory is just a my hypothesis, that is, upper body's silent period and lower body's muscle contraction are in correlation. In other words, upper body's silent period causes lower body's muscle contraction at the almost same time. The reason is that, human skeleton can not stand without muscle contraction. Therefore, if your upper body's muscles go into complete relaxation by pre-motion-silent-period, your lower body's muscles will contract for keeping the standing posture. Probably, our body has that kind of nature, and it occurs in the start of hitting mechanics.

Thus, in the case of batting, upper body's silent period and lower body's muscle contraction occurs at the same time in the scene of "start-of-hitting-mechanics". By the way, according to scientific article, pre-motuon-silent-period has a symmetrical nature. That is, when you hit a punch with your right arm, pre-motion-silent-period is observed also in your left arm. So that means muscle contraction should occur in both legs. (This fact becomes importance in next chapter.)

Both legs generate the power in the moment of start.

Thus, in the moment of start, both legs generate the power and push the ground. However, back leg sustains more heavy weight than front leg, so that, back leg generate the power more largely than front leg. As a result, hip is carried forward by ground reaction force from back leg. And this is the mechanics of stride.

Be that as it may, next factors compose the "start of hitting mechanics": [consciousness of power production] [upper body's silent period] [lower body's muscle contraction]. These factors are in the same time at the "moment of start".
By the way, importance of the word "hit hard" becomes more clear by considering the nature of pre-motion-silent-period. Because in the case of trying to accelerate your bat with 98% power, upper body muscles go into 98% relaxation and lower body muscles generate 98% power. As a result, much enough relaxed upper body and much enough lower body's power enable you to swing so smoothy and strongly.  On the other hand, in the case of trying to accelerate your bat with 60% power, upper body muscles go into 60% relaxation and lower body muscles generate 60% power. In this case, good result will not be brought. In other words, good mechanics is brought by trying to generate a big power. Therefore, hard hitting is very important theme. However and of course, hard hitting does not always bring the good mechanics. It is rather one of the minimum requirements for getting the good mechanics.

Consciousness of 60% acceleration leads 60% muscle relaxation and contraction.
