Chapter4 Classification Based on Motion of Step

Puncher type's mechanics can be classified into three types based on motion of step. First of all, watch the following video clips of these three type hitters.

By the way, Understanding of the definition "start-of-hitting-mechancis" becomes key stone for understanding of these three types mechanics.

Adrian Beltre,  Andruw Jones,  Matt Kemp,  Jason Giambi  (Automatic Step)
Prince Fielder,  Michael Young,  Jason Nix,  Mark Trumbo  (Two Step)
Alex Rodriguez,  Jose Bautista,  Adam Jones  (Leg Lift Step)

I'm sure that, as for puncher type, the proper step method is limited to only above three types.

By the way, I explained "start-of-hitting-mechanics" and "starting-position" in chapter3. And in the experiment of chapter2 (following figure), starting position is formed after front leg was lifted up. That mechanics is classified as "leg-lift-step".

Above experiment means leg lift step.

Examples of leg lift step

On the other hand, in the case of automatic step, batting stance means starting position. Thus, puncher type mechanics can be classified based on "how to make the stating-position". So then, in the case of two-step, how do they make the starting-position?

First of all, see the following clips of typical two step hitters.
Mark Trumbo,  Prince Fielder,  Michael Young ,  Jason Nix

First, They step back once, and it means "first-step". Next, they start their hitting mechanics from landing point of first-step. And it is important that, their second-step is the automatic-step. Namely, two-step is one kind of automatic step.

The third shot of this sequence-illustration is Sosa's starting-position.

Colored shot of following illustration means starting-position of Samy Sosa, that is, it means starting position of two-step mechanics. Recognizing the own starting position and making the stable starting position is very important for puncher type hitter.

So then, let me write about mechanics of leg-lift-step. Following clips are typical example of leg-lift-step.

Alex Rodriguez,  Manny Ramirez,  David Ortiz,  Jose Bautista,  Joey Votto

By the way, mechanics of leg-lift-step has an important theme about "how to make the starting position". So now, let me explain it with Alex Rodriguez's hitting mechanics.

 (Alex Rodriguez      swing1  swing2   swing3)

A typical leg-lift-step motion ( Alex Rodriguez )

It is important that starting-position of leg-lift-step is second shot of  above illustration. It is not third shot. It means that, starting-position is formed before the load. (Colored shot of following illustration means starting position of leg-lift-step.)

In general, load is thought as a necessary motion before the swing for power generation. Because in the load, hands move back like a "draw bow action". But when your hands move backward, your body also moves forward. Because these two actions are in correlation based on physical law. That is, load is accompanied by weight transfer. And it is important theme that you can not hit a punch strongly without putting your weight on the basement leg. So that, starting-position should be formed before the load. Because load causes weight sift from back leg to front side.

Load occurs automatically when you try to swing from starting-position directly. Namely, load is an unconscious motion. So that, you should not take the load as a conscious motion before the swing. This is the most important theme for the leg-lift-step.

So then, confirm that by Alex Ramirez's swing. Alex Ramirez is also a typical leg-lift-step hitter.

His starting position is (2) of above sequence photography, and (3)~(5) is the load and stride. In his consciousness, he should start his swing from (2) directly. But in actually, his swing start from (5). Understanding this difference between "consciousness" and "actual" is very important for the leg-lift-step.

By the way, as mentioned above, puncher type mechanics can be classified into three types based on step motion. So then, which type is ideal?  In fact, from the "only"mechanical point of view, automatic-step can be said as the ideal way.  Because automatic-step is conforming to essential theme of puncher type mechanics like below.

1) Generate the power without any preparation motion.
2) Excess weight transfer can be reduced.
3) Despite it's compactness, it is powerful enough.

By the way, as for weight transfer, if Reggie Jackson (or Mark McGwire ) lifted up his front leg more highly, could he swing more strongly?  I don't think so. In the case of puncher type, large weight transfer does not always cause powerful swing. Or rather starting-position is required to be static and stable for generating the big power. So that, large weight transfer rather becomes an unfavorable factor for power generation.

On the other hand, two-step and leg-lift-step makes you easy to take a rhythm and timing. But, in the case of puncher type mechanics, these step motion has not effect on acceleration. Ultimately, these step motion can be said as an unnecessary motion.

Thus, from the "only" mechanical point of view, automatic-step can be said as the ideal way, but, as a result of considering some other factors (for example rhythm or timing), automatic-step can not be said always as the ideal way. After all, question of "which type can make the highest record" has no answer.

But I want to say only one thing that practice of the automatic-step is very effective for two-step hitters and leg-lift-step hitters. Because automatic-step has an effect on improving the "essential mechanics". Therefore, regardless of what step you chose, you should do the practice of the automatic-step. Even if it is only in the drill, it will improve your swing. And this sort of attempt can not be thought up without my theory. This is a kind of effect of "studying hitting theory".

Only automatic step can make realization the word "hit hard with empty mind" .

In puncher type mechanics, after "start-of-hitting-mechanics" means automatic phase. In that phase, all motions occur automatically depend on consciousness of acceleration. On the other hand, before the "start-of-hitting-mechanics" means conscious phase. For example, in the case of leg-lift-step, lifting up of front leg is a conscious motion.

By the way, as special mention matter, in the case of automatic step, all motion is in the automatic phase. That is, in the case of automatic step, all motions occur automatically depend on consciousness of acceleration. Therefore, automatic step hitters can concentrate only on the "hard hitting" and "contact". And that state can be said as the word "hit hard with empty mind".

In addition, that fact means that automatic step is the most natural hitting mechanics for the human body. Because "automatic" means natural function of human body. This is the most primary reason of why I think automatic step is the ideal way.

~ incorrect mechanics ~

As mentioned above, as for step motion of puncher type, there are three proper mechanics. So now, let me explain about "incorrect" step motion. There are two primarily patterns of incorrect mechanics. No-Step and Fake-Automatic-Step are it.

1) No-Step

No-step can be explained like that swing without taking off front foot from the ground "actually". Basically, no-step makes you difficult to rotate your hip enough, and it has a risk of Injuries. For example, front leg is at risk, because toe can not be open enough before hip rotation. In short, no-step is unnatural motion as hitting mechanics.

Examples of no-step
Albert Pujols,  Sean Rodriguez,  Sam Fuld,  Andruw Jones

No Step

2) fake-automatic-step

Fake automatic-step looks like an automatic-step at the first impression. As for fake-automatic-step, I want to show some examples before explain. Provably, you will understand it when you see it.

Examples of fake-automatic-step
Davie Wright,  B.J.Upton,  Ryan Howard,  Reid Brignac,  Bill Hall
Aaron Hill,  Josh Whitesell,  Curtis Granderson, Bryce Harper, John Buck

Simply put, fake-automatic-step is one kind of no-step.  First, they take one step as a "conscious motion" like a two-step type. Next, they start their hitting mechanics as a no-step from landing point of first step. In other words, fake-automatic-step can be explained like that "no-step mechanics is embed into the two-step mechanics".  That's the fake-automatic-step.

Fake Automatic Step

Mechanics of automatic step

(1)~(3) is fake step and (3) is landing scene. In many cases, this type hitters land with toe.  (3) is the starting-pojition and after the "start-of-hitting-mechanics" fake-automatic-step is same as no-step.

Anyway, no-step can not be established as a correct mechanics. And It is no matter about skillful or unskillful. Regardless of whether Barry Bonds or your girl friend, it is not abel to establish as a correct hitting mechanics, as simple as that.

That is, hitting mechanics can't be completed without taking off your front foot from the ground. By the way no-step hitters and fake-automatic-step hitters often show different step. Probably, unnaturalness of their step mechanics bring them some kind of "stress", and it causes them to change the step motion oftenly. Following clips are examples of it.

David Wright (fake-automatic-step)    David Wright (leg-lift-step)
Ryan Howard (fake-automatic-step)    Ryan Howard (may be automatic-step)
Sean Rodriguez (fake-automatic-step)   (leg-lift-step)  (no-step)
Andruw Jones (no-step)    (fake-automatic-step)     (automatic-step)
Albert Pujols (no-step)    Albert Pujols (automatic-step)

By the way, fake automatic step have been increased suddenly in today's MLB since about 2000's. Probably, it is concerned with spread of automatic step and puncher type. And it will be said as a proof of that "small step" became some kind of common understanding of hitting mechanics.

As mentioned above, automatic-step is ideal hitting mechanics in my theory. So following contents will be wrote about automatic-step mainly.
